The Best Time Was...

The Kid Who Hangs Out With Ronald's Name - Kevin Haberly was the one who gave out most of our nicknames. This was probably because it gave him just a little satisfaction and removed a bit of the sting from his own nickname, Grubby. Kevin was the chubbiest kid in our group and he took a lot of ribbing. But, he learned how to dole out his own brand of ribbing too. When I had just a few whiskers on my chin but I never bothered shaving, he labeled me as "Shaggy" (from Scooby Doo). And when someone wrote "Paul Duquin eats donkey pickles" on the back of a STOP sign, he started calling Paul "pickle" or "green" or any other thing that had a direct or indirect connection with pickles. I would hardly be able to describe to you the convoluted logic he used to come up with "Buttons" as Gary Myszka's nickname. And when Kenny Kujawa showed up in that huge aqua blue parka one winter, he earned the nickname "Clip Smith" (Clip Smith was the CH. 7 WKBW-ABC weatherman who donned a similar coat when he did the weather outside). But, when poor Peter Duquin was trying to get us to remember the name of the kid who hangs out with Ronald (Kevin's uncle), he said "Do you know the kid who hangs out with Ronald's name?". Kevin got such a kick out of it because to him it sounded like Ronald's name had a kid who hangs out with it. So, instead of giving Peter a nickname, Kevin would just remind us all of what Peter said, "Do you know the kid who hangs out with Ronald's name?". That was the best time!
