The Best Time Was...

Can You Hear Me Now? - It was a cold winter day in Fort Wayne; while school was out for Christmas break (2003). I was in charge of the kids. So naturally I let Melanie & Brian go outside and play. They went a couple doors down to sled on the hill by the water runoff ditch. That left me free to just keep an eye on Michael. The kids were good and they didn't bug me for a couple of hours. When it was almost time for dinner, I opened the front door and shouted "Melanie, Brian...time to come home!". I waited a few minutes, but no response. It was too damn cold for me to go out there myself. So, this time I went out the back door and shouted again "Melanie, Brian...time to come home!". Again there was no response. Not wanting to get bundled up to go look for them, I gave it one more shot - "Melanie, Brian...time to come home!". This time, after a couple of minutes, they both came stumbling into the house. They took off their coats & boots at the front door. They huffed & puffed, their cheeks & nose all red from the cold. So I ask them "Didn't you guys hear me?". "No!" was the response from both of them. "You sure?" I asked, "I shouted pretty loud!". "Nope, we didn't hear you Jim!" they repeated. So I asked "Then why did you come home now?". To which Melanie replied "Well, we heard you the third time!". Busted! That was the best time!
